4 Ways to Enrich Our Dogs' Lives
Cold winter months can be tough on our dogs, even for those that attend our daycare program or other socialization opportunities such as off-leash pack walks. We are the first to recognize that daycare is not a "one stop shop" for fulfillment so here are some of our favorite ways to add extra stimulation to our dogs' days.
1) Structured Tug or Fetch
Cooperative games like structured fetch or tug not only offer a physical and mental outlet, but also strengthen your relationship with your dog. Implementing rules to the game, like relinquishing the toy on cue or asking for behaviors in order to re-engage in the game, will not only cultivate dynamic and conscious effort on your dog's part (rather than static repetition of chasing a ball or toy) but also for thoughtful collaboration.
2) Food Puzzles
Food puzzles are a great way to challenge your dog mentally by engaging their nose and seeking system. There are many ways to create a "puzzle" at home, like hiding treats around the room, burying them in a towel, or in a box for them to search for and hit the dopamine jackpot.
Using a portion or all of their meal in place of bowl feeding that day can be a good way to prevent overfeeding when engaging with these food-based activities!
3) Teach a New Behavior
Learning a new behavior or trick, no matter how small, is hard work for your dog! You can begin shaping a new behavior or obedience position to give your dog a mental workout, build confidence, and bolster your relationship, all from the comfort of your own living room.
4) Work through Obstacles
Build your dog's confidence and strengthen their proprioception by leading them through obstacles. You don't need any fancy equipment to do this; consider what surfaces, platforms, or structures may be background to you, but could be novel to your dog in a training context.
By leading them through these physical (and mental) challenges, you can foster their confidence in navigating unfamiliar contexts while keeping their body moving.
